Exhibition: SHOW 2016 by James Oliver

March 11, 2016.7:00 pm-May 26, 2016.10:00 pm

James Oliver is something you haven’t seen before
This exhibition features a retrospective of James Olivers last three years of work and presentation of new and unseen wonders.

FullSizeRenderCheck out Charles Barbers and Jonny Rose´s EPIC review of this stunning exhibition!

What started as an on and off hobby prior to December 2012 and having dropped out of the Royal College of Arts citing ‘creative differences’, soon evolved into a serious string of successful shows, commissions and collaborations from here to Germany, with acrylic based epics, abstract and adapted vintage pieces. Think science fiction. Planets, giant robotic gods, vast landscapes and rainbows dominating old masters and familiar settings.

The power of social media
James Oliver is a wanted man. His career launched with a large piece (Kai) which was uploaded to Facebook and quickly generated interest, then sales. Oliver continued to create on demand and experiment, putting in more effort each time, sharing online and shipping worldwide. Now in 2016, he has sold more than one hundred pieces. This hobby has become more than a potential sideline. He was quickly picked up by Creative Debuts and has had  several successes in London, even collaborating with Croydon’s very own RISE Gallery on a mural in St. Georges Walk.

Up-and-coming James Oliver’s work is born from the simple desire to create and rarely contains personal reference, political content or any statement of intent.  In fact, it may seem quite nonsensical crashing the classical and futuristic without purpose. Yet there is something captivating and addictive about how natural the observer feels in accepting these wonders.

Lego, Epic tales (Gulliver’s Travels, Book of Revelations, 2001) are huge influences along with Artists, Goya, Robert Rauschenburg, Claes Oldenburg, and Jake and Dino’s

Asked why he does what he does “I love making stuff! There is no great political substance, I’m not really trying to make a point, I see myself as purely just a creator and if people want to buy or show my works then that’s an added bonus! There is an ongoing theme, and that is of ‘epicness’. If I’m ever trying to achieve anything, I’m trying to create my own (Kubricks) ‘2001’ or Bohemian Rhapsody, I want to make people smile, think and maybe go ‘wow’.

I would like people to see something they haven’t seen before…”
