Open Letter from Croydon Politicians

[one-half-first]

This letter is intended to demonstrate cross-party support from elected officials and political representatives in Croydon to Save Matthews Yard and ensure it remains in its current location in the basement of 5-9 Surrey Street.

The premises was recognised as an Asset of Community Value by Croydon Council on 7th March and developers submitted proposals to demolish the building on the 8th March. Almost 6,000 Croydon residents have signed a petition in support of Matthews Yard and a number of business, community and cultural leaders are in the process of putting their names to letters similar to this one.

We understand that the whip system may have prevented some of you from speaking out in the past, however, as planning applications are not subject to the involvement of the party whip, we wanted to seize this opportunity to seek your support for Matthews Yard, by way of a public objection to the application to demolish the building at 5-9 Surrey Street.

CC: Jo Negrini, CEO Croydon Council

Dear Colleagues,

We, the undersigned elected representatives and electoral candidates are writing to object to proposals to demolish the building at 5-9 Surrey Street.

Matthews Yard is based in the basement of this building and for almost 6 years has operated as a grassroots arts, cultural and community hub. This success was recognised earlier this month when the premises was recognised by Croydon Council as an Asset of Community Value.

The developers have had no dialogue with the Save Matthews Yard campaign and their proposals, if approved would result in the loss of this protected asset for at least two years while demolition and rebuilding takes place. I find this unacceptable and urge you to reject the plans.

Yours Faithfully
